Variaciones enigma (1896) lo hicieron famoso; a esta obra siguió el oratorio
La visión de Geroncio (1900), que muchos consideran como su obra maestra. Compuso en el idioma orquestal del romanticismo decimonónico tardío –caracterizado por melodías audaces, efectos tonales llamativos y el dominio de las grandes formas–, lo que estimuló el renacimiento de la música inglesa. Entre sus obras principales están las cinco marchas
Pompa y circunstancia (1901–07), dos sinfonías (1908, 1911), conciertos para violín (
1910) y violonchelo (1919), y los poemas sinfónicos
Cockaigne (1901) y
Falstaff (1913).
